What is Paint Correction

This page is to help our future clients have a better understanding of paint correction and why its so important when detailing and restoring your cars paintwork

What is Paint Correction ?

Paintwork correction is the process of permanently removing swirl matks, scratches and imperfections from car paintwork, resulting in restoring the paint back to a natural high gloss shine

How does the paint correction process work ?

Paint correction is a process of machine polishing the paintwork on a car, the smoother a painted surface is, the shinier it will be.

Scratches and imperfections cause indentations in the surface of a cars paintwork , preventing light from reflecting naturally off the surface, thus causing the swirl mark effect. The idea of the process is to effectively sand the uneven surface back to a smooth finish , just as you would at home with a skirting board before you gloss painted it.

Starting with an aggressive pad and compound combination, the paintwork is first sanded back to remove the major damage, smoothing out the surface to restore the natural colour that is often masked by the damage.

Once it is smooth we work with a selection fine compounds to give a highly polished mirror gloss finish.

How long does it take to do correctly ?

Every car is different, depending on how much damage there is to the paintwork and how hard the actual paint is itself, it can take on average 3 – 4 days to carry out this process correctly.

Some lesser detailers or car valeters masquerading as detailers may tell you they can do it in a day, this is just simply impossible, these guys generally use products that mask and hide the imperfections, fooling you into believing you have had your car detailed correctly. These products then either degrade or simply wash off over time to reveal all the imperfections that they were hiding.

Only a full paint correction carried out by a professional detailer can guarantee permanent removal of scratches and swirl marks from your car paintwork.

Once the scratches, swirl marks and imperfections are removed, we recommend protecting the paintwork with a good quality ceramic coating , you can read more about our paint protection coatings on our What is ceramic paint protection page.

Can all scratches be successfully removed from a cars paintwork ?

The truth is no they can’t, although we do our absolute best to get your paintwork as flawless as possible with our paint correction process, some scratches are just too deep to remove safely.

If the scratch has cut straight through the top coat into the base colour or even the primer, then persevering with this will only cause more damage to the paintwork, resulting in burning through the finish completely…. which obviously isn’t what we want to achieve.

In this case we work to round off the sharp edge of the scratch , helping natural light to reflect more , which takes your eye away from it when looking over the car.

We will always show our clients the imperfections that can’t be permanently removed and will never take a chance damaging the paintwork unnecessarily.

Finally the ceramic coating is applied, this bonds directly to the molecules of the paint forming a tough glass like shell, offering unrivalled protection whilst enhancing the shine even further.
